The menopausal journey is often depicted as a tumultuous time marked by physical changes and hormonal imbalances. However, beneath the surface lies a profound spiritual journey waiting to be explored. Central to this journey are the energy chakras, each playing a vital role in our emotional and spiritual well-being. Let’s take a brief look at these energy centres and discover how they can guide us through the transformative experience of menopause.
What are the Energy Chakras?
Let’s start at the beginning! We have 7 main chakras, all aligned along our spine from our Root chakra up to our Crown chakra at the top of our head. Eastern medicine/philosophy believes that energy runs up and through these centres, with each governing the function of a range of organs and glands. When energy is flowing freely, we feel healthy and happy; but when there are blockages in any of these centres, we can start to feel unwell with complications and even disease in the organs related to the chakra.
At menopause our bodies undergo huge changes, with fluctuations in our hormone levels which have a knock-on impact on the way we feel, how much energy and motivation we have etc. But understanding how energy flows through our bodies, and how the menopausal changes can impact the way it flows, will help us to better manage our feelings and behaviours and unlock those centres so we can feel more in balance.
Don’t know anything about the chakras?
Here’s my quick guide to the 7 energy centres, where they are in our bodies, and what happens as we go through menopause, and these become unbalanced.
The Root Chakra: Finding Stability and Grounding
Located at the base of our spine the root chakra is the centre for our sense of safety, security, and stability, and is responsible for our basic survival skills and ability to navigate the material world.
As we navigate the choppy waters of menopause, it’s common to feel adrift, lost, and disconnected. The root chakra serves as our anchor, providing a sense of belonging, trust, and connection. By activating this foundational energy centre, we can cultivate a feeling of balance, centredness, and grounded ness, easing the sense of aimlessness and disconnection that often accompanies this phase of life.
What are the Energacral Chakra: Unlocking Passion and Creativity
Our second chakra is based in our lower abdomen roughly in line with our uterus and is our emotional and creative centre, holding the key to tapping into our sense of passion, creativity, and joy. It is the centre of our most powerful energy, the Kundalini, often depicted as a coiled snake. The Kundalini becomes active as we go through puberty and is especially strong should we become pregnant. It is responsible for giving us the drive to create life and the “glow” we often get through pregnancy.
Many women traversing menopause find themselves feeling blocked or disconnected from their emotions, leading to a lack of enthusiasm and inspiration. This emotional stagnation can manifest as anhedonia, a term used to describe the inability to experience pleasure – think about sexual pleasure and libido which often reduce during this time. At menopause the Kundalini energy can become blocked in our sacral chakra, especially as we transition into post menopause and menstruation ceases – the energy has no release. By energizing and aligning the sacral chakra, we can reignite our inner fire and reclaim our zest for life.
Solar Plexus Chakra: Igniting Inner Fire and Drive
Located at the base of oLocated roughly in the middle of our bodies, just below the rib cage, the solar plexus chakra is likened to the energy of a thousand suns, symbolizing our inner fire, determination, and will to succeed. Yet, during menopause, this sense of inner drive can wane, leaving us feeling unmotivated and lacking in ambition. It is another area where the Kunalini energy can become blocked resulting in physical symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats. By awakening the solar plexus chakra, we can rekindle our passion and rediscover our sense of purpose, infusing us with the vitality and motivation needed to pursue our dreams.
Heart Chakra: Cultivating Love and Compassion
At the heart of our being lies the heart chakra, the centre for unconditional love, compassion, and kindness. Reconnecting with this energy allows us to extend kindness and forgiveness to ourselves, nurturing a sense of self-compassion that is especially potent during the menopausal journey. I always say that the menopause demands many things of us, but most of all it demands that we pay attention to ourselves and make time for self-care. By treating ourselves with the same love and care we would offer to a dear friend, we open the gateway to higher realms of consciousness and inner healing.
Throat Chakra: Expressing Authenticity and Truth
The throat chakra, based in our throat close to our vocal cords and larynx, governs our ability to speak our truth and express ourselves authentically. Many women in menopause struggle to articulate their thoughts and feelings clearly, leading to a sense of frustration and inner turmoil – how many times have you found yourself crying or getting angry because you just can’t get your words out or say what you feel? By working with this energy centre, we can tap into our authentic voice, expressing ourselves with integrity, honesty, and clarity. Additionally, the throat chakra enables us to give voice to our dreams and creative ideas, allowing us to manifest them into reality.
Third Eye Chakra: Awakening Inner Wisdom and Intuition
The third eye chakra, based in the middle of our forehead just above our eyebrows, is associated with our inner wisdom, intuition, and perception. As we journey through menopause, our perception may become clouded by the stories we tell ourselves, leading to feelings of confusion and uncertainty. However, this phase also offers an opportunity to tap into our innate wisdom and intuition, guiding us towards clarity and insight. By energizing the third eye chakra, we can embrace the spiritual aspect of menopause and navigate this transformative journey with grace and wisdom.
Crown Chakra: Embracing Liberation and Enlightenment
Finally, the crown chakra, based at the top of our heads, serves as the gateway to universal consciousness, liberation, and oneness. During menopause, we are invited to let go of attachments and embrace our true essence, stepping into a state of enlightenment and self-realization. By activating the crown chakra, we can accept this invitation with open arms, surrendering to the flow of life and embracing our authentic selves.
The menopausal journey is not just a physical or hormonal transition but a profound spiritual awakening – I felt it and have been searching for greater meaning in my life. By working with the energy chakras, we can navigate this transformative experience with grace, wisdom, and empowerment, emerging on the other side with a renewed sense of purpose, joy, and fulfilment. Let us embrace the journey, trusting in the wisdom of our bodies and the guidance of our inner selves.
Let’s remember that menopause is not the end but a new beginning—a gateway to deeper self-discovery, healing, and transformation. Let us honour the wisdom of our bodies and the resilience of our spirits, knowing that we possess within us the power to navigate this journey with grace and dignity.
